In Schwurstadt, class is everything. Class separates the wealthy from the poor and the important from the unimportant, to put it simply. After the adoption of slavery, slaves became yet another symbol of status. Being an expensive investment, they were seen as another way of flaunting wealth. However, instead of also flaunting dominance by keeping their slaves in rags and underfoot, the wealthy masters choose instead to dress them almost as well as their wives. Some go as far as to dress them in order to offend rivals in business, bringing them to parties in excellent evening wear to flaunt their wealth.

Of course, the Svetch slaves are keen to understand such things. They see it as a chance to get close to their masters and either win their hearts for better privileges or strike a deadly blow at those who have wronged them so personally.
